TSW was retained by the City of Powder Springs to update their Town Center Planning LCI Study from 2002. The update, known as the Powder Springs LCI, focused on revitalizing the downtown area through a community engagement process. The goal of the process was to create a vision for the downtown area that leveraged the city’s unique history, attracted appropriate development, and explored improvements in walking, biking, and traffic.
The community engagement process was extensive and included multiple methods of gathering input from the public, such as public meetings, a visioning workshop, an online survey, a visual preference survey, stakeholder interviews, core team meetings, and an information booth at the Pink Ribbon 5K. This approach helped to ensure that the Powder Springs LCI reflected the needs and concerns of the local population.
The framework plan that was developed from this process included recommendations for various improvements to the downtown area. These included on-street bike facilities to connect to the Silver Comet Trail, compact residential development along Lewis Road, infill development in the downtown and Town Square areas, and enhanced streetscapes to improve mobility and sense of place. Overall, the plan calls for 258 new residential units and 30,500 square feet of new commercial space to be added to the downtown area.
The Powder Springs LCI aims to improve the walkability and bike ability of the downtown area, and create a sense of place that is unique to Powder Springs. The revitalization of the downtown area will not only improve the aesthetics of the city but also attract new businesses and residents, and increase economic development. The plan is a comprehensive and holistic approach to rejuvenating the downtown area, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the community for years to come. The Powder Springs LCI will be used as a guide for the city’s future development and will be reviewed and updated as needed.
