KAANAPALI NORTH BEACH |

TSW served as the land planners for Amfac/JMB’s 17,000-acre property in West Maui known as Kaanapali North Beach from 1988 to 1992. During this time, TSW was responsible for all aspects of planning and design, including golf course communities, resort facilities, affordable housing, agricultural subdivisions, and new towns. The primary focus of the project was the 3,300 acres surrounding the existing Kaanapali Beach Resort, where the challenge was to balance the demands of primary residential and resort uses while preserving the rural character and agricultural productivity of the land.
To achieve this, TSW implemented a unique approach by establishing “country towns” within a low-density rural and agricultural area, which helped to integrate the disparate land uses. This innovative strategy allowed for a comfortable coexistence of residential, resort, and agricultural uses while preserving the rural character of the area. In addition to preserving the rural character of the area, TSW also designed the resort facilities and golf course communities in a way that would complement the existing landscape. The resort facilities were located as strategic activity/amenity nodes, ensuring that they would not disrupt the natural beauty of the area. Instead, they were integrated into the landscape in a way that would enhance the overall experience for visitors and residents. One of the defining features of TSW’s work in West Maui was its focus on sustainability and preserving the natural environment. The firm’s innovative approach to integrating different land uses while preserving the rural character of the area helped to create a unique and sustainable development that would benefit the community for years to come. In conclusion, TSW’s work in West Maui demonstrated its expertise and commitment to sustainable development. The firm’s innovative approach to balancing the demands of different land uses while preserving the rural character of the area has been a model for sustainable land planning and development. The successful integration of residential, resort, and agricultural uses in the area is a testament to TSW’s expertise and dedication to creating sustainable communities. |
