ATLANTA BELTLINE MASTER PLAN: SUBAREA 1 |
Atlanta, Georgia | |
The 2010 Master Plan for BeltLine Subarea 1 puts forth a comprehensive vision for public improvements and private redevelopment in the neighborhoods along a nearly two mile section of the BeltLine in southwest Atlanta. The BeltLine is a 22-mile loop of trails, transit, and parks following an abandoned railroad right- of-way. Subarea 1 includes the neighborhoods of West End and Westview. TSW worked closely with the local community and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. to develop a 30-year plan for a series of mixed-used redevelopment nodes that will provide expanded job, housing, and neighborhood-supportive retail options today, while also laying the foundation to support future transit. A network of news streets, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, multi-use trails, and transit improvements will link these nodes with each other, the BeltLine, and new or enhanced public parks. The plan also addresses several challenges unique to Subarea 1 by developing an interim strategy for adaptive reuse of historic industrial buildings and a phased redevelopment concept for an existing automobile-oriented commercial center, with attention throughout to design solutions to improve public safety. Recommendations also address transportation improvements to accommodate future traffic from new redevelopment. |
